Antarctic region marine observations for 1895-1940

As a contribution to the work of ACRE, some marine observations from ships supporting Antarctic expeditions in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been digitised.

We decided which data to digitise by looking for expeditions where the ship data was not already in ICOADS and there were printed ship or meteorological logs available to us. Eight expeditions were chosen:

  1. The Belgica expedition of 1898-99
  2. The voyage of the Southern Cross, 1898-1900
  3. The British Antarctic Expedition 1901-4 (the Discovery).
  4. The British Antarctic Expedition 1907-9 (the Nimrod)
  5. The French Antarctic Expedition 1908-10 (the Porquoi-Pas)
  6. The British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13 (the Terra Nova)
  7. The Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-14 (the Aurora)
  8. The British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition 1929-31 (the Discovery)
  9. The United States Antarctic Service Expedition of 1939-41 (the USS Bear)
