Antarctic region marine observations for 1895-1915
Discovery 1901-4
Data from The Discovery Expedition of 1901-4 were available as a copy of the Met. log in the Met Office archives. The weather observations from this book have been digitised and converted into IMMA records.
- Data as digitised (Excel spreadsheet,Tab delimited text))
- Script to convert to IMMA format (uses this Perl module).
- IMMA records.
Problems and limitations
- The book used contains only observations made while the ship was frozen into the ice (in Winter Quarters Bay, McMurdo Sound) - voyages to and from Antarctica are not included.
- The expedition also involved two supporting ships (Morning and Terra Nova). Observations from these two ships are not included.
- It is not clear how ship's time relates to GMT (what time-zone were they keeping on board)? The observation times have been converted to UTC assuming a time zone based on the exact longitude of the observation (i.e. 166.67 E, the longitude of Winter Quarters Bay).
