Antarctic region marine observations for 1895-1915

Discovery 1901-4

Data from The Discovery Expedition of 1901-4 were available as a copy of the Met. log in the Met Office archives. The weather observations from this book have been digitised and converted into IMMA records.

Problems and limitations

  1. The book used contains only observations made while the ship was frozen into the ice (in Winter Quarters Bay, McMurdo Sound) - voyages to and from Antarctica are not included.
  2. The expedition also involved two supporting ships (Morning and Terra Nova). Observations from these two ships are not included.
  3. It is not clear how ship's time relates to GMT (what time-zone were they keeping on board)? The observation times have been converted to UTC assuming a time zone based on the exact longitude of the observation (i.e. 166.67 E, the longitude of Winter Quarters Bay).
