Antarctic region marine observations for 1895-1915

Nimrod 1907-9

Data from The Nimrod Expedition of 1907-9 were available as a copy of the book "Kidson, E., 1930: British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909, under the command of Sir E.H.Shackleton. Reports on the scientific investigations. Meteorology, Melbourne, 188 pp" in the Met Office archives. The weather observations from this book have been digitised and converted into IMMA records. The records are divided into two groups: those from the voyage down to land the expedition in early 1908, and those from the voyage to retrieve the expedition members in 1908-9 (the ship returned to New Zealand between the two trips).

Problems and limitations

  1. It is not clear how ship's time relates to GMT (what time-zone were they keeping on board)? The observation times have been converted to GMT assuming a time zone based on the exact longitude of the observation, except that it is clear that ship's time did not change on crossing the date line (180E) so all longitudes are treaded as degrees East, even if greater than 180.
