Antarctic region marine observations for 1895-1915

USS Bear 1939-40

Some data from the voyage of the USS Bear during The United States Antarctic Service Expedition of 1939-41 were available as a microfilm copy of "Dorsey, H. G., U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition 1939-41, East Base Meteorological Summary. National Science Foundation Contract NSF C194. Aerometric Research Inc, Goleta, 135 pp." (Provided by Phil Jones at UEA). The ship observations from this document have been digitised and converted into IMMA records.

Problems and limitations

  1. The longitudes in the data tables proved difficult to decode. It turns out that they are Greenwich longitudes missing their most significant digit. That is, the January 28th 1940 longitude of 95.3 is correct (truncated from 095.3), but the January 12 longitude of 58.3 is actually 158.3.
